2023 Las Vegas Challenge Recap - DGPT Stop 1 of 16

, by Adam Mackrory, 6 min reading time

What an opening weekend it has been for the Disc Golf Pro Tour, with hot rounds from chase cards on the last day, multiple things getting in the way, change of leaders throughout the weekend on MPO, and a dominant lead from FPO.

The 2023 Disc Golf Pro Tour kicked off this past weekend at Wildhorse for The Las Vegas Challenge.

The 2023 Las Vegas Challenge has proved to be one of the more exciting opening tournaments in recent years, and we really hope that will be a reflection of the 2023 season as a whole.

Before we go any further, we will be talking about the winners and the goings ons from LVC 2023.

2023 LVC Spoiler Alert

Dominating from start to finish!

In FPO there was a clear leader from the starting hole right to the end. Catrina Allen went out there are proved that without Paige Pierce and Kristin Tattar in the field that she is the one to be watching.
Consistent shooting in the first three rounds gave Catrina an 8 shot lead going into the final round where she shot even. Her only round that wasn't under par.

Catrina had already done the hard work, although it was a stress free final round by any means. On the back stretch Cat's drive hit a golf cart and landed OB, but Cat was able to stay composed and did what she needed bringing home the win.

Catrina didn't do this without competition. There were a handful of players that could of competed for the win if they were able to put a full round together. The two ladies that could have put it together were Ella Hansen and Missy Gannon. It was no easy feat and it may have been too much from the beginning.

Ella was able to reach a lot of the par 4's for eagle but her putt in the windy conditions let her down and she wasn't able to convert her distance into the strokes needed.

Missy was in a similar situation where her smart play got her into scoring positions but her putt, or should I say the wind, made it hard to convert that into strokes on Cat.

Congratulations to your 2023 Las Vegas Challenge Champion, Catrina Allen.

With players like Holyn Handley shooting a super hot, 1,016 rated, 9 under on the final round, this makes me REALLY excited for the season we have in front of us.

We welcome back Paige Pierce and Kristin Tattar at the next stop in WACO and we don't expect anymore run away competitions from here on out. Strap in.

The best defence is a good offence!

MPO had a much tighter tournament. There were multiple leaders throughout the weekend with many of them not being able to put together subsequent hot rounds. Do you not feel this is why all elite series should be 4 rounds? The 4th round at LVC this year certainly provided the extra entertainment we wanted.

After round 1 we saw a three way tie with James Procter, Scott Withers and Anthony Barela in tied 1st place. It was great to see AB stay hot and hold solo 1st place after round 2, he had some familiar names chasing in Kevin Jones and Eagle McMahon. KJ USA pulls ahead from the field by 2 strokes after round 3.

Coming into the final round we have:
Kevin Jones -26
Eagle McMahon -24
Anthony Barela -24
Calvin Heimburg -23
It's close. We over here at Ace fly many flags for a lot of different players but Kevin Jones has always been a favourite of mine (Bubba's) since the Prodiscus days and I really wanted to see him cash in here at LVC.

KJ went cold after hole 11 and proceeded to par every hole. This held pace with the chasing Calvin Heimburg but he needed something special on a windy hole 18 to force a playoff with Calvin. Heimburg tee'd off first and he managed to luckily stick it inbounds at the second landing zone. KJ's drive got smacked down by the wind and went OB. Kev needed a throw in to make something happen, and OH BOY was this close, hitting top of the basket but this wasn't meant to be KJ's event.

Calvin felt much more composed, which makes sense as he's been in this position many times in the past.

Hot rounds earlier in the day from Ezra Aderhold, Kyle Klein and Matt Bell pushed them into some great cash positions but weren't enough to catch your 2023 Las Vegas Challenge Champion, Calvin Heimburg.

We have a rest weekend this weekend before we head to WACO on the 10th of March.
